CIPD Learner Stories: Grace Harajda

Grace Harajda chose to study with DPG after discovering that HR could turn her interest in people, psychology and workplace behaviour into a career she could see herself growing in.

My name is Grace, I’m 25 years old, and I currently work in my first HR role as a People Coordinator in a private healthcare company.

I originally studied Psychology at university, as I’ve always had a keen interest in how and why people work the way they do. I knew I wanted to work in a people-focused field, but at the time, I wasn’t aware of the HR route or how I could apply my studies to a real-world role.

I joined the company I work for now in a business support role within a psychotherapy team. However, I soon realised that I didn’t want to pursue a clinical psychology route, which was when the CIPD was first introduced to me.

Finding My Route into HR

I first found out about CIPD qualifications online, through social media. At the time, I felt a little lost in my role. It wasn’t where I saw myself in five or ten years, and I hadn’t previously had much interaction with the HR team, so I wasn’t fully aware of the work they did or the difference they could make.

After coming across information about CIPD Level 5Associate Diploma in People Management, I did my research and felt that it ticked all the boxes for me. It combined my personal interests and love of all things people-focused, while helping me turn those interests into a career. I could study something I genuinely cared about and hopefully move towards a career path where I felt I belonged. 

At the same time, an exciting opportunity came up within the people's team at my company, which meant I was able to begin my HR journey.

Choosing to Study with DPG

I ended up signing up with DPG, as the advisor I initially spoke to was warm, welcoming, and made me want to connect more with individuals with a similar interest to me.

I never felt as though I was asking too many questions, and I was pleased that I could study remotely while still having access to a tutor. This meant I could learn and progress at my own pace whilst holding a full-time job.

The DPG site itself is easy to navigate, modern and accessible. I’ve found the guidance on referencing, reading and browsing for online resources particularly helpful.

At first, I was hesitant about whether I would struggle with less support compared with attending university, but this hasn’t been a challenge. There is always support available through the online guidance and I have access to a tutor for any specific questions or topics I’m struggling to get my head around.

Studying Around Full-Time Work

The remote aspect of the course has been beneficial.

I currently work full-time, and I’m lucky enough to have time in the evenings and at weekends to study. Because the course is designed for people like me, you don’t feel as if you are falling behind or going too slow.

Everything works at your own pace, and for me, there’s a real sense of achievement in having the motivation to study and succeed outside of work.

Having a weekly plan helps me organise my week, manage work and personal responsibilities, and keep on track with my studies. I love what I study, so it never feels like a burden or a dread.  

Applying My CIPD Learning at Work

Once I started my HR role, I began benefiting from my CIPD Level 5 studies straight away. Seeing day-to-day examples of the skills and lessons I was learning about is what really pushed me to continue and grow. I started asking fewer questions, applying my

CIPD knowledge directly, and feeling much more confident in myself as an HR professional.

As I continue in my role, I realise how valuable a CIPD qualification is in HR, and I’m grateful I discovered this route early in my career. It has made me feel excited for the future and has opened up a career path where I can really see myself grow.

Looking Ahead in My HR Career

Once I have completed my course, I’m excited to continue developing my career.
I would love to move into a People Advisor role, where I would be able to apply my knowledge of employment law, employee relations and general people management to support employees more effectively.

I admire the difference HR professionals can make throughout the employee lifecycle, and I’m excited to continue making a positive impact throughout my career!
