CIPD Learner Stories: Yuliia Khotieieva

After moving to the UK from Ukraine, Yuliia Khotieieva chose to study CIPD Level 5 with DPG to help deepen her knowledge of HR structures and processes and support her transition into People Practice.

After graduating from university and getting Master’s degree in Psychology, my plan was to build a career in HR sector. However, after several unsuccessful interviews, I started working as a counsellor and then an English teacher for several years in Ukraine.

When the war in Ukraine started, I moved with my son and mum to the UK.

My Career Progression in the UK

I then began a new chapter of my personal life and career that led me, unexpectedly, into the field of employment consultancy. This transition proved highly successful as around a year ago, I was honoured to receive the ERSA Award as the best Employment Advisor in the UK.

While this recognition was a significant milestone, it also served as a catalyst for my next professional evolution.

I realised that while my psychological background provided deep insights into human behaviour, moving into a dedicated Human Resources role required a more robust understanding of UK employment regulations, HR principles, and organisational structures.

To bridge this gap, I enrolled on the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma.

Making Time for a Flexible Study Routine

As a full-time professional and a mother, I required a learning model that offered both academic rigour and extreme flexibility.

Discovering a remote, self-paced qualification path was the solution that allowed me to balance my career and family responsibilities without compromising on the quality of my education.

Currently, I dedicate 2–3 hours a day, several times a week, to my studies. Rather than viewing this as an additional burden, I approach it as a constructive change from my daily routine—a space for professional reflection and growth.

The course structure is particularly effective because it uses real-life organisational examples, allowing me to feel personally involved in corporate processes as if I were already operating within an HR department.

Measurable Impacts and Outcomes from Studying CIPD

The impact of my studies is already evident in my current role.

My senior colleagues have noted the shift in my professional approach, and I have become more evidence-based, applying critical thinking and a rational approach to every action I take.

I would describe my experience with this qualification in three words: structured, balanced, and really inspiring. Everyone at DPG is approachable and ready to support.

My ultimate goal upon completion is to transition into the People Practice department within my current company.

My Advice to Other Learners

To anyone considering this path, my advice is to embrace the journey; it provides the essential boost of confidence and the technical skills needed to grow both as a professional and as a person.

Believe in yourselves and don’t be scared to go for your dreams and try something new in your life.
