As a working mother looking to expand her knowledge of HR, Sarah Cheeseman enrolled on a CIPD course to gain confidence and practical skills she could apply in her job.
Before starting my CIPD Level 3 qualification with DPG, my background was mainly in administration, but over time my role started to involve supporting our HR manager as well. Quite quickly I realised that I really enjoyed the HR side of the business as I liked supporting colleagues and helping solve problems.
My manager suggested that I should look into doing the CIPD Level 3 course. After looking into it a bit more, I felt like this was the right next step and enrolled shortly after.
My main goal was to build more knowledge in HR and gain more confidence in the work I was already doing.
One of my biggest worries before starting was whether I’d be able to balance studying alongside work and everyday life. I’m a mum of three and it had been quite a while since I’d done any formal studying, so there was definitely some self-doubt at the start about whether I’d manage it all. Once I got going and found a routine though it felt much more manageable than I expected.
One of the things I’ve found really helpful about studying with DPG is how the course is set out on the website. The modules are broken down into clear sections, which makes it easier to stay focused and not feel overwhelmed. Being able to study at my own pace has made a big difference too, as it means I can fit it around my work and home life.
I haven’t needed to use the tutor support much because everything is explained really well, but it’s reassuring knowing someone is there if you do need help. For me, that takes away a lot of the pressure and makes the whole experience feel much more supportive.
I’m currently about halfway through the course and already I can see how much my confidence and understanding have grown.
What I’m learning isn’t just theory, either; I’ve been able to apply quite a bit of it in real situations at work, which my manager has really appreciated. I’ve also found myself looking at things differently and thinking more about the reasons behind why organisations do what they do.
I already feel like it’s been a positive step for both my personal development and my career. Once I complete the course, I’m hoping to use the knowledge and confidence the qualification has given me and continue progressing in the HR field.
If I had to give advice to someone thinking about studying with DPG, I’d say just go for it. Yes, it can feel a bit daunting at first, especially if you’re juggling work, studying and home life like I am, but once you start it feels much more achievable.
I’d honestly highly recommend the course - it’s really easy to slot into everyday life and you can just take it one module at a time.
