What Makes a Good Leader?

Why going back to school could be good for HR and Learning Professionals.

Leadership and Management
School is back, the kids are gone.
That’s right, you heard. They’re someone else’s problem now. Your regular weekday schedule may now resume.

The annual return to school is awash with emotions, from the elation of having the kids out from under your feet to the proud moment they don that oversized blazer for the very first time.

School is where leaders are made.

Barack Obama? He went to school. Angela Merkel? School. Steve Jobs? You can probably guess where I’m going with this…

Why is this important you say? Well, because most businesses just couldn’t run without a leader.

From Harry Kane leading the England team to James Quincey, the CEO of Coca-Cola. Every ship needs a level-headed captain at the helm guiding it through choppy oceans and into calmer waters.

So as leaders and managers, why should education stop in school?

Education is the cornerstone of leadership. Being the school prefect might not have seemed so interesting back in the day, but those who took on the task were testing preparing themselves for a future in which they’d need these essential skills. They also tend to be the more successful students post-education.

Not everything about leadership can be learned in a school however, education must carry on throughout life if we are to prosper and we must strive to develop leadership itself.

For instance, this week’s Women into Leadership event in London, an annual conference focused on improving leadership opportunities for women and managing the challenges of modern leadership has completely sold out.

This is because a good leader never stops educating themselves, whether it’s through personal research, events and conferences or even through educational programmes.
