CIPD Learner Stories: Amy Beeston

Operational HR Manager

In Short

I found the programme engaging and interactive – plus I met some lovely people who I am still in touch with! The online modules were easy to complete and kept my focus. I could manage my study in hours to suit me around my work and personal life.

Why did you choose DPG?

I wanted a provider that would fit with my working life and home life. It was important to be able to do my study flexibly and to learn at my own pace. It was also really important for me to have a blended learning approach. I knew that I wanted to attend workshops to meet other people, study at my own pace online via e-lessons rather than it all being online and have a dedicated tutor for additional support. What DPG offered ticked all of these boxes and more! The location was perfect, the flexibility to join a different group where it clashed with holidays just made it an easy choice – not to mention the helpful staff who provided me with all the right information prior to deciding.

What were your goals of starting the programme?

I started my career in HR in 2006 as an HR Administrator and was put through my Level 3 Certificate in Personnel Practice at the time. 5 years later I moved to a new company in a standalone HR role which really excelled my development. After 2 years I moved to a company 8 times the size to work with an established HR team, being promoted to an Operational HR Manager after 18 months. I decided to study my Level 5 CIPD Diploma in HR Management to compliment my HR experience and to provide me with strategic practices used in HR. I found that the further up the ladder I climbed, employers were looking for a minimum of this qualification despite having 10 years’ experience! It was important that the information I learnt could be applied and this was a key objective for me. My HR experience and the Diploma helped to show the mastery of my knowledge but with the ability to apply my newly learnt skills into a commercial business environment.

How did the programme help?

Shortly after the first workshop I was able to adapt my knowledge and start asking questions in regard to the business HR Strategy! This is something that was alien to me before and I had no real context to hold these conversations confidently. I was able to offer ideas to ensure the strategy worked for the business and the HR team to ensured it was aligned. My confidence has soared and I feel I have a better rounded knowledge of operational and strategic HR. I have recently commenced a new role at Bollington Insurance as a HR Manager where both the business and I are keen to implement engagement initiatives, succession planning and look at reward and recognition – strategies I wouldn’t have felt confident to design and implement prior to my qualification!

What you would say to anyone thinking of doing a programme with DPG?

I would absolutely recommend DPG as a provider. The learning was at the right pace, the workshops were engaging and interactive – plus I met some lovely experienced people who I am still in touch with! The online modules were easy to complete and kept my focus. I could manage my study in hours to suit me around my work and personal life. The DPG online community is amazing – full of so much information and advice and guidance from HR / L&D professionals in abundance! This really helped during my programme and continues to assist me!
